The Johnstons' Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind

Devils Tower in Wyoming

Sides of the volcano cone

Climbers on Devils Tower

Many of you remember the movie "Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind" from the late 70s and the vision of where they met the aliens. In actuality, the place is called Devils Tower and is located in Northeast Wyoming! It is the nation's first national monument so designated by President Teddy Roosevelt in 1906. It is the core of a volcano exposed after millions of years of erosion brought on by the Belle Fourche River and the weather. The boys loved climbing on the boulders at the base of the tower which are broken pieces of columns (most of them 6-sided) that have fallen from the sides. The tower stands 865 feet high. We saw several climbers on the sides as they attempted to reach the top which is about as big as a football field. It has been revered by many Native American tribes as a religious site.
